Homemade tomato sauce

DSC_0032Great thing you can do for your body is to replace pre-made or artificial foods with homemade alternatives. In other words – some stuff you buy in grocery store can be easily made at home. For example, tomato sauce. Why you should bother and make it at home?

1. It is much healthier. Do you know that good quality canned tomatoes have more valuable properties than imported (comparing in winter time. You already know how lithuanian winter looks like – no chances for fresh local tomatoes)? You will also consider the quality of other vegetables you are planning to put into your sauce. And spices. So no starch, preservatives or other unnecessary stuff.

2. It is always fresh. You should make the amount you will be able to use in 5 days.

3. It can be adjusted perfectly to your taste. Create it the way you like it. If you want to add something extra – feel free to do so. Create your own favourite recipe.

4. It is filled with love. Sounds funny? Actually it is true – it’s proven, that food made with attention and love is tastier. So homemade tomato sauce is definitely better than one from your store.

Ok, so my version of the sauce is simple. I like to keep things plain, so I could use the same product in different meals.

I usually use:

1 big onion
3-4 cloves of garlic
half of chilli pepper
1 large can of tomatoes (without any spices)
some sunflower oil
some salt
spices:  pepper, grated fenugreek, cumin, turmeric.

Cut onion in small pieces (I use food processor), put into preheated pan with some oil and cook until onion gets yellow. Put all the spices into pan and mix well. Blend tomatoes with garlic well (I use food processor again) and pour it into the pan, add salt. Cook until water is resolved and the consistency of sauce is not runny anymore. Taste and add some salt if needed. That is it!!
